Celebrate World Anthropology Day with us!

We will have extended museum hours (open until 6pm) followed by a lecture by Dr. Bruce McMillan at 6 PM.

The Ozark Bluff Shelters: A Window into the World of Perishable Artifacts

The talk will provide an overview of archaeological investigations in the dry shelters of southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas beginning with Mark Harrington’s pioneering work in the 1920s, Sam Dellinger’s efforts in the early 1930s, and Carl Chapman’s research in the 1950s. The illustrated lecture will highlight the rise and later demise of the concept of the “Ozark Bluff Dweller,” and modern interpretations of this assemblage of perishable artifacts.
